Three appearances per match is the number worth sitting with. That is not a novelty cutaway deployed once in a showcase fixture. It is a repeatable production element that directors reached for consistently, across a full tournament, in live conditions, without the failure rate that would have quietly retired it after the group stage. For a first deployment at this scale, that is the difference between a technology and a demo.
Read the Fan Numbers Carefully
Lenovo also published survey data from fans across Australia, Canada, India, the United Kingdom and the United States: 87% said technology is improving their viewing experience, and 84% said close-to-action camera perspectives helped them feel present on the pitch.
Those are strong numbers, and they should be treated with the caution any vendor-published figure deserves. The survey was commissioned by the company selling the technology, the question wording is not public, and 'is technology improving your experience' is close to a leading question — few people say no to progress in the abstract. The directional signal is probably real; the precision is not the point. What the numbers cannot tell you is whether fans would have paid more, watched longer, or switched providers because of it. Compare that with an in-stadium AR layer, which requires mass behaviour change before it returns anything, and the prioritisation writes itself. The first category pays for itself in a season.
